A New Year

The forecast is ok but the wind is expected to swing Easterly later in the day, so better to be at launch earlier rather than later.
Its not what you would call a "classic" thermalling day, but I launch well, into a 10 knot SSW wind.
I'm only finding ridge lift and manage only 157 m above launch. Trying to top land the lift fades and I end up below the ridge, I look at landing on one of the spurs running down the face of the hill but think better of it, pushing out in front to land in the LZ paddock.
With no pickup available I decide to climb the hill, an hour later I stagger on to launch completely stuffed. I won't be coming up that way again.
After a good half an hour rest I am ready to go. Conditions haven't improved so I stick to ridge soaring over the launch site and when the lift dies completely I successfully top land for the first time at Moir's.

Arriving back at the car park I find I have left the headlights on and flattened the battery. Duh! But I was right about the wind, it has swung to the East.

A New Year

Looks a possibility, maybe a little strong, but what the heck let's go have a look. Arriving at launch it is marginal, steady 22-25 km/hr min 15 max 30 ish. Sit and see if it changes. It does, strengthening slightly to 33 max, and swinging once again to the SE. Steve Dwyer and Les Graham turned up to show me how Hangies do it, and although Steve launched and soared for a while, Les didn't have a good day. The clouds finally gave up and so did I.

Inversion

Looked quite hazy with few clouds on the drive North, and sure enough these proved to be good tell-tales of an Inversion. At launch we appeared to be above the haze and the conditions were good for takeoff. Once in the air it proved difficult to get above 600m, and those that did found themselves back down with the rest after losing what they had. In the end I missed my opportunity to top land and ended my flight after an hour or so at the usual spot. First flight of the Season, forgot to set the GPS to log, and couldn't get Livetracking to work, a good shake-me-down flight.
